As a result of the passage by Congress on August 20, 1964 of the Economic Opportunity Act, Community Action Agencies – like PEACE, Inc. – were established to foster equal opportunity, empower the disenfranchised, promote inclusion, and respect and value diversity.

In 2002, the PEACE, Inc. staff and Board of Directors expressed a desire to publicly recognize individuals and organizations who, in a variety of ways, consistently respect and value all forms of diversity in our community.  They established an annual dinner to honor as Champions of Diversity those in our community who have shown exceptional dedication to helping people in the community realize their potential for becoming self-sufficient.
