Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks to change the lives of children for the better, forever.
Our unique brand of one-to-one mentoring matches a child with a caring adult mentor in a relationship supported by professional Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members. Matches share everyday activities, such as eating out, playing or attending sporting events, going to a movie, sightseeing and so on.
Community-Based Program: Adult One to One Mentoring
We accept applications for children between the ages of 6 and 12 who reside in Onondaga County and the Central Square area of Oswego County. When a child is matched with a volunteer, as long as the volunteer stays in the program, the child may participate until they are 18 years old. Big Brothers Big Sisters asks our volunteers to make a commitment to a child for one year, spending 8 to 10 hours a month with their “Little”. All our volunteers and anyone over the age of 18 living in their household must undergo a criminal background check, provide three personal or professional references, attend an orientation session and be interviewed in their home.
School-based Mentoring Program:
College & High School students mentor Elementary school students
The School-based Mentoring program operates after school one day a week for the entire school year at either the high school or elementary school. The program consists of tutoring, homework assistance and socialization. The students will also have the opportunity to participate in field trips throughout the year.
We currently have programs at 8 Syracuse City School District Elementary Schools and 2 Elementary Schools in the Central Square District.
