May is National Community Action Month. Community Action Agencies work to move families from poverty to economic security. PEACE, Inc. is the Community Action Agency serving Onondaga County, New York.
Fourteen percent of Onondaga County residents and 32% of Syracuse residents have incomes at or below the Federal Poverty Line, which is $23,550 for a family of four in 2013.
Each year, Community Action Agencies serve 20 million people in rural, suburban, and urban communities across the country through a variety of targeted programs, such as Head Start, Weatherization, job training and placement, financial education, mentoring and other programs.
Last year, PEACE, Inc. served more than 15,000 Onondaga County residents in Head Start/Early Head Start, Foster Grandparents, Family Resource Centers, Neighborhood Advisor, EISEP, Project ROSE, Senior Lunches, Weatherization, EITC: You’ve Earned It! free tax preparation services, and DeFrancisco Eastwood Community Center.
