Books and Cooks at Liverpool Head Start
Now in its 5th year, Books and Cooks is going stronger than ever! Each month, our Liverpool Head Start invites 10 families to come cook something new. Parents and teachers help children 3-5 years old cut, measure, and mix ingredients and — while the dish cooks in the oven — everyone joins a reading circle, enjoying a food-themed book. This past month saw some skeptical parents and kids try roasted asparagus for the first time while reading the classic folktale, The Very Large Turnip. In past months, ‘try me’ dishes have included everything from pumpkin soup to pineapple basil salsa. It’s proven to be a great way to expand families’ culinary horizons while establishing cooking and reading as activities best done together. It’s been a huge hit and a perfect example of how Head Start works best when it engages the whole family!
