Books and Cooks at Liverpool Head Start

Books and Cooks at Liverpool Head Start

Now in its 5th year, Books and Cooks is going stronger than ever! Each month, our Liverpool Head Start invites 10 families to come cook something new. Parents and teachers help children 3-5 years old cut, measure, and mix ingredients and — while the dish cooks in the oven — everyone joins a reading circle, enjoying a food-themed book. This past month saw some skeptical parents and kids try roasted asparagus for the first time while reading the classic folktale, The Very Large Turnip. In past months, ‘try me’ dishes have included everything from pumpkin soup to pineapple basil salsa. It’s proven to be a great way to expand families’ culinary horizons while establishing cooking and reading as activities best done together. It’s been a huge hit and a perfect example of how Head Start works best when it engages the whole family!

Same Book Program Engages Kids and Parents

Same Book Program Engages Kids and Parents

The school to home connection is absolutely central to the Head Start program. Parent engagement is key. It takes all hands on deck to get kids ready for kindergarten. This is especially evident in the vaunted, longstanding ‘Same Book’ program, where each year Head Start selects a single book for all sites to repeatedly read in school and at home (repetition being critical for literacy acquisition.)

This year, the Head Start staff chose the book “Chalk” – notable for its spectacular illustrations and its wordless format, allowing families from all literacy and language backgrounds to have fun reading the story of 3 kids finding a bag of magical chalk. The book along with a booklet of developmentally appropriate activities went out to every Head Start and Early Head Start family.

Also this year, a fruitful collaboration with Liverpool High School’s Community and Culinary Arts CTE programs made for some great videos, writeups, colorful bookmarks, and nutritious snacks for the kids. (We planted some promising seeds, too, with several high school participants who are considering a future career in early childhood education).

Research shows positive results for children whose parents engage with their child’s school, regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic background and even educational levels. What matters is a positive attitude and presence. ‘Same Book’ facilitates that presence, helping build these critical, lasting bonds between parent and child and school where everyone wins.

Amazon Community Heroes Honors Bigs

Amazon Community Heroes Honors Bigs

Proud moment for PEACE, Inc.’s Big Brothers Big Sisters! Our bigs were honored as Amazon Community Heroes by the Syracuse Crunch! Big and little duos (Mike and Amadeus, Shaun and Elijah) were delighted to be recognized. And we’re delighted that they could bring some attention to the valuable (and fun!) work done at BBBS. There are few volunteer opportunities that can be as impactful or fulfilling as being a ‘big’ to a young person in our community. If you’re interested in volunteering, check in right here.

Congratulations to Angie Taylor, our Employee of the Month for March!

Congratulations to Angie Taylor, our Employee of the Month for March!

Angelia Taylor began working in our Head Start program in 2015, following two very active years as a Head Start volunteer. Over the past 10 years she served as a Nutrition Aide, Teacher Aide, and Teacher Assistant at the old Jordan and Baldwinville classroom sites. Last month, shortly after those sites were combined at our new location in Baldwinsville, she became the front desk Administrative Assistant at our Merrick site.

Angie’s years of knowledge and experience, as well as her ability and motivation to learn new things, have helped her excel in all of her various Head Start roles, and they have benefited the many people she has built relationships with along the way, by filling in wherever needed or providing technical assistance or just listening and offering some very appreciated advice. As one of her supervisors commented: “She sets her goals high and is someone staff looks up to for help and guidance.”

Congratulations and thanks to Angelia Taylor, our Employee of the Month for March!

Foster Grandparents Receive Grant Support

Foster Grandparents Receive Grant Support

A huge thank you to the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County for awarding a $3,000 grant to PEACE, Inc.’s Foster Grandparent Program! With this generous support, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteering in Syracuse City Schools and Head Start/Early Head Start Classrooms will receive specialized early childhood literacy training — empowering them to make an even greater impact on young learners’ lives. This is but one wonderful example of our Seniors imparting wisdom while continuing their own lifelong learning. It’s a win for everyone involved!
