Kids of Head Start

Head Start / Early Head Start program support children’s growth from birth to age 5 through services that support early learning and development, health, and family well-being. Head Start staff actively engage parents, recognizing family participation throughout the program as key to strong child outcomes.

Head Start services are available at no cost to children ages birth to 5 in eligible families. Head Start preschool services work with families with children ages 3 to 5. Early Head Start services work with families with children ages birth to 3, and also serve expectant families.

Center-Based option:

Head Start (HS)

3-5 years of age
Head Start (HS) helps children, ages 3 to 5, achieve their full potential by providing early childhood development, health, family services, and other support to participants and their families at no cost.

Eligibility: To qualify, you must meet federal income guidelines and have a child 3-5 years of age.

Early Head Start (EHS)

0-3 years of age
Early Head Start (EHS) promotes the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth of infants and toddlers, and provides prenatal education and support services to pregnant women.

Eligibility: To qualify, you must meet the federal income guidelines, and you must have a child younger than three or be an expectant mother.

 

Home-Based:

The Home-Based Program is for pregnant women and children from birth to five years old.

Child (birth to five) and Parent Support Services

Home visits cover areas of child development, health, nutrition, social, and emotional well-being. The home-based model is fostering parent/child relationships.

Pregnancy Support Services

Home visits from a maternal child health nurse include information about prenatal and post-partum care, nutrition, breastfeeding, childbirth, and newborn education.

 

All Programs Provide:

  • High-quality individualized educational programming to prepare children and families for kindergarten.
  • Opportunities for parents to volunteer, to connect school to home, and to promote school readiness.
  • Services and referrals in all areas of health, mental health, nutrition, disabilities, education, and socialization.

Does my family qualify for the Head Start program?

Your family qualifies for the Head Start program if your household income is at or below the poverty level. Check the Poverty Guidelines to see if your family qualifies.

Families who receive public assistance (TANF, SSI, or SNAP), and those with children in foster care or children who are homeless, also qualify regardless of income.
