Employee of the Month for January is Ryan Leach!

Ryan Leach has been a nurse with our Head Start / Early Head Start program since 2005. She has worked throughout every part of the program, and currently covers several of our classroom sites as well as other daycare programs with whom we collaborate. In addition to her regular duties involving medical and dental screenings, addressing illnesses and injuries, and health education and advocacy, Ryan has been an American Red Cross CPR and First Aid instructor for over 10 years and has trained over 100 of our staff. She has also been instrumental in promoting the Cavity Free Kids and Stop the Bleed initiatives. We should also note that Ryan was previously honored for her exemplary work as Employee of the Month in December of 2010!

Congratulations to Ryan Leach for receiving our Employee of the Month award a second time, and for being our first honoree of 2024!

Americorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program collected school supplies

Americorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program collected school supplies

In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, our AmeriCorps Senior Grandparents Program collected and delivered the donations to local schools!

Special thanks to Abundant Life Church for their generous contribution. Your donation significantly increased the number of supplies collected, ensuring more students have the tools they need to succeed.

The AmeriCorps Senior Foster Grandparent Program connects older adults with children facing challenges. This school supply drive was a beautiful example of intergenerational solidarity, as grandparents made sure the younger generations had the resources they needed to thrive.

We thank our AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers, Abundant Life Church, and everyone who contributed to this important project. Together we uphold Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.”

PEACE, Inc. Executive Director Reads to Merrick Head Start Students

Carolyn Brown, Executive Director of PEACE, Inc., took a break from her executive duties to visit Merrick Head Start and read to the children in room 211. Brown’s warm and engaging storytelling brought the pages of the book to life for the young listeners.

The children were captivated by Brown’s stories and her expressive reading. They giggled at the funny parts, gasped at the suspenseful moments, and cheered for the characters they came to love.

Brown’s visit was a reminder of the importance of early literacy and the power of storytelling. She hopes that her visit will inspire the children to develop a love of reading that will stay with them throughout their lives.

“It was such a joy to read to the children at Merrick Head Start,” Brown said. “Their enthusiasm and excitement were contagious. I hope that I was able to spark a love of reading in them that will last a lifetime.”
