Generous donation sends area children to camp
The success of Haylor, Freyer & Coon (HFC) golfers in a national tournament made it possible for more than 100 Onondaga County youth to make the most of their time off from school this summer.
Four HFC employees (Bruce Wichmann, Robert Rayo, Jim Stoddard and Kent Schmidt) took third place in the annual Chubb Charity Golf Challenge which allows insurance agents from all over the country to compete in a golf tournament on behalf of a charity of their choice. We are so grateful to Haylor, Freyer & Coon for selecting PEACE, Inc. to receive the $40,000 donation, which PEACE, Inc. used to send children ages four to 18 to summer camp and on fun and educational field trips.
Children attended 200 weeks of camp, including Boeheim Basketball Camp, CBA College Prep Football Camp, College for Kids at Onondaga Community College, Lourdes Camp, and LeMoyne Reading Camp. In addition, groups of children from PEACE, Inc.’s six Family Resource Centers took exciting fieldtrips to destinations like Wonderworks, a horseback riding farm, the MOST, Jamesville Beach and Hershey Park.
Many children have limited opportunities to leave their own neighborhoods. Participating in the classic American summer camp experience or venturing out on a field trip can make a lasting impression on a child. These summer activities expose youth to new places, interests and people and allow them to envision new possibilities for themselves.
